Fake IRCTC Helicopter Booking Sites Scam Amarnath Pilgrims: Govt Alert
Fake IRCTC Helicopter Booking Sites Scam Amarnath Pilgrims

The Indian government has issued a stark warning to devotees planning the Amarnath Yatra, alerting them to fraudulent websites that are impersonating the official IRCTC helicopter booking portal. These fake sites have been designed to deceive pilgrims seeking helicopter services for the arduous journey to the holy cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir.

How the Scam Operates

According to an official advisory from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, cybercriminals have created cloned websites that closely resemble the legitimate IRCTC helicopter booking platform. The fake sites often use domain names that are slight variations of the official one, such as adding extra words or using different top-level domains like .org or .net instead of .in. Once a pilgrim lands on these fraudulent pages, they are prompted to enter personal details and make payments for helicopter tickets that do not exist. The money is siphoned off, and the victim receives no booking confirmation.

The advisory states that several complaints have been registered with the Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and local police stations. In one reported case, a group of 15 pilgrims from Gujarat lost over Rs 2.5 lakh after booking through a fake site. The government has not disclosed the total number of victims but emphasized that the scam is widespread.

Official Booking Channels

To combat the fraud, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has reiterated that the only authorized portal for booking helicopter services for the Amarnath Yatra is the official IRCTC website at irctc.co.in, or its dedicated mobile app. Additionally, the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) also provides booking links on its official website. Pilgrims are strongly advised to verify the URL carefully before entering any sensitive information. The official IRCTC site uses a secure HTTPS connection and displays a padlock icon in the address bar.

“We urge all yatris to exercise extreme caution. Do not click on unsolicited links or advertisements offering discounted helicopter tickets. Only use the official IRCTC platform or the SASB website,” said a senior official from the Ministry of Civil Aviation in a press statement. The ministry also warned that legitimate helicopter fares are fixed and any site offering steep discounts is likely fraudulent.

Safety Tips for Pilgrims

The government has released a set of safety tips for pilgrims booking helicopter services:

  • Always type the official URL (irctc.co.in) directly into the browser instead of clicking on search engine ads.
  • Check for HTTPS and a padlock icon before making any payment.
  • Never share personal information or OTPs with unknown callers claiming to be from IRCTC.
  • Use only credit/debit cards or UPI through secure payment gateways. Avoid direct bank transfers.
  • Report any suspicious websites to the Cyber Crime helpline at 1930 or via the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

Pilgrims who suspect they have been scammed should immediately contact their bank to freeze transactions and file a complaint with local police or cyber crime authorities.

Government Response and Awareness Campaign

The Ministry of Civil Aviation, in coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has launched an awareness campaign across social media and at major railway stations and airports in Jammu and Kashmir. Pamphlets and posters with the official booking URL and helpline numbers are being distributed. The government has also requested search engines to take down fraudulent advertisements and websites. As of the latest update, over 50 fake domains have been identified and blocked, but new ones continue to appear.

The Amarnath Yatra, which typically takes place between July and August, attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year. Helicopter services are a popular option for those who wish to reduce the physical strain of the trek. The government advises pilgrims to book well in advance through official channels and to be wary of last-minute deals. The official helicopter fare for the 2026 season has been set at Rs 3,200 per person for the one-way journey from Pahalgam to Panjtarni, and Rs 2,800 from Baltal. Any deviation from these rates should be treated with suspicion.
