Margao: A Chinchinim resident lost Rs 3 lakh to cyber fraudsters who posed as officials of the National Consumer Forum, tricking him into sharing his mobile phone screen, police said.
How the Scam Unfolded
The victim, Alphone Monteiro of Chinchinim, Salcete, was contacted by an unidentified accused through an online site purportedly linked to the National Consumer Forum. The fraudster offered to help him file a complaint on the portal and asked him to share his phone screen, ostensibly to assist with paying the form fees.
Believing the request to be legitimate, Monteiro shared his screen, allowing the accused to view and control his device remotely. The fraudster then siphoned off Rs 3 lakh from his bank account in a single transaction on April 18.
Police Investigation Underway
Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter. Authorities urge citizens to be cautious of unsolicited calls or messages asking for screen sharing or remote access to their devices.
