The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced on Sunday that it is actively engaging with industry stakeholders to develop a comprehensive regulatory framework for mobile security in India. This move comes in response to growing concerns over cyber frauds and data privacy, aiming to safeguard the vast amounts of sensitive information stored on smartphones used by over a billion citizens.
Stakeholder Consultations Underway
In a statement released late Sunday, MeitY clarified that it is conducting routine stakeholder consultations on various aspects of mobile safety. These discussions cover a wide range of topics, including safety compliance, electromagnetic interference and compatibility (EMI/EMC) parameters, support for Indian languages, interface requirements, and crucially, security requirements. The ministry emphasized that various aspects of security standards will be discussed with the industry only after the consultation process is complete.
The government is exploring multiple options to strengthen the overall system. These measures range from securing individual mobile phones to implementing more robust systems within banks and establishing mechanisms for the faster and more effective recovery of funds lost to scammers.
The Critical Need for Mobile Security
MeitY underscored the paramount importance of mobile security in today's digital landscape. Smartphones have become central to financial transactions, the delivery of public services, and the storage of highly sensitive personal data. With India's massive user base, these devices hold immense amounts of personal and financial information, making them prime targets for malicious actors.
Hackers often seek banking details, personal photos, and login credentials, which can lead to severe consequences like identity theft, significant financial loss, and profound privacy invasion. The ministry also pointed out that for businesses, unsecured mobile devices pose a serious risk of operational disruption.

Addressing potential concerns from the industry, the government sought to reassure companies and other stakeholders. MeitY stated that the government is committed to working collaboratively with the industry and addressing their legitimate concerns. This collaborative spirit is why the government has been engaging with manufacturers to better understand the technical and compliance burdens involved, as well as to examine international best practices adopted globally.
The ministry assured that any legitimate concerns raised by the industry would be examined with an open mind, balancing the best interests of both the nation and the industry.
