BJP MP Manoj Tiwari Takes Legal Action Against Impersonation on Social Media
Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Parliament Manoj Tiwari has initiated legal proceedings by filing a First Information Report (FIR) against a fraudulent Facebook account that has been operating under his name with a blue-tick verification badge. The complaint was formally registered at the Cyber Police Station in New Delhi district, marking a significant step in addressing the growing issue of identity theft on digital platforms.
Details of the Fraudulent Account and Police Complaint
According to the FIR, the fake account, titled ‘Manoj Tiwari BJP’, has been active for an unspecified period, prominently featuring photographs of the MP, including images with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Tiwari, who represents the Northeast Delhi constituency, submitted his complaint on January 22, 2026, leading to the registration of the FIR on Thursday, with police officials confirming the development on Saturday.
In his statement, Tiwari emphasized that the account has no connection whatsoever with him and was created without his consent or authorization. He expressed grave concern over the unauthorized use of his name, photographs, and videos, stating that this impersonation is being exploited to circulate misleading and false messages, thereby tarnishing his public image and position.
Legal Framework and Investigation Underway
The FIR has been lodged under Section 66C of the Information Technology Act, which deals with identity theft, and Section 356(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to defamation. This legal action underscores the seriousness with which such cyber crimes are being treated under Indian law.
Tiwari has urged the Delhi Police to conduct a detailed and immediate investigation into the matter. His requests include:
- Taking appropriate steps to deactivate the fraudulent account promptly.
- Ensuring strict legal action against the unknown individuals involved under applicable provisions of law.
- Preventing further misuse of his identity on social media and in society at large.
A probe is currently underway, with authorities working to identify and apprehend those responsible for this impersonation.
