Goa MP Sounds Alarm on Rising Cyber Frauds Targeting Tourists via Fake Websites
Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade has urgently called upon the central government to take decisive action against fraudulent websites that are systematically cheating tourists visiting Goa and other popular destinations across India. The MP raised this critical issue during the zero hour session in the Upper House on Friday, highlighting the escalating threat of online scams in the tourism sector.
Tourism Boom Marred by Digital Deception
Tanavade emphasized that while Goa has firmly established itself as a premier tourism hub and a favored destination for digital nomads and remote workers, this growth has been accompanied by a sharp and concerning increase in cyber frauds. Specifically, he pointed to sophisticated scams involving hotel bookings and digital payment frauds that are leaving tourists financially devastated and emotionally distressed.
The modus operandi involves criminals creating fake hotels, homestays, and fraudulent websites that impersonate reputable hotels and legitimate booking portals. Unsuspecting tourists, lured by attractive deals, make advance payments only to discover upon arrival that their bookings do not exist. This not only results in significant financial losses but also disrupts travel plans and tarnishes the overall visitor experience.
Organized Networks Exploit Digital Anonymity
Despite repeated advisories and warnings issued by authorities, organized fraud networks continue to operate with impunity. These criminal groups leverage fake websites, virtual mobile numbers, and anonymous digital platforms to evade detection and prosecution. Tanavade argued that mere advisories are woefully insufficient to combat this growing menace, which requires a more robust and proactive governmental response.
"Advisories alone cannot tackle this sophisticated threat. We need concrete, enforceable measures to protect our tourists and safeguard India's reputation as a safe and welcoming destination," the MP stated during his address.
Call for Stringent Regulations and Real-Time Action
Labeling the situation a serious threat to both tourist safety and India's global tourism image, Tanavade proposed several key measures. He urged the central government to enforce strict Know Your Customer (KYC) norms for all tourism-related websites and online booking platforms. Additionally, he advocated for the implementation of real-time monitoring systems to swiftly identify and shut down fraudulent websites before they can cause harm.
The MP stressed that in today's digital age, protecting tourists' digital safety is equally as important as ensuring their physical security. He called for a coordinated effort between central and state agencies to dismantle these fraud networks and restore confidence among domestic and international travelers.
As India continues to promote itself as a top tourist destination, addressing these cyber threats is paramount to sustaining growth and maintaining the trust of visitors who contribute significantly to the local and national economy.
