A 46-year-old woman from Narhe, Pune, fell victim to an online share-trading fraud, losing Rs 52.7 lakh between January 30 and April 2. The woman lodged a complaint with the Pune cyber police on Wednesday.
According to an officer from the Pune cyber police, the complainant's husband is the director of a software company in Hinjewadi. In January, the woman saw an advertisement about investing in an IPO. When she contacted the phone number mentioned in the advertisement, the fraudsters assured her of maximum profit with minimal investment in the stock market.
The officer explained that the crooks shared a link with her and asked her to download their firm's trading app to make investments and monitor profits. Initially, they took small amounts from her to purchase IPOs and trade. They gained her confidence by showing in the app that she was earning profits on her investments.
Subsequently, the fraudsters lured her by offering more profit for larger investments. The woman transferred Rs 52.72 lakh to different bank accounts provided by them. However, when she tried to withdraw her money, she was unable to do so. When she started pursuing the crooks for her money, they stopped responding. Realizing she had been duped, she approached the police.
The officer said they have sought details of the transactions from the complainant's bank. An investigation is underway.
