Tonk Police Cracks Down on Multi-Crore Cyber Fraud Network
The District Special Team (DST) of Tonk police achieved a significant breakthrough on Friday by apprehending two individuals accused of orchestrating a widespread cyber fraud scheme. The operation, which spanned an estimated Rs 12 crore, targeted victims across 22 states in India, highlighting the extensive reach of modern digital crimes.
Arrests and Seizures in Bhilwara
Acting on intelligence and complaints, the police arrested the duo identified as Ramavatar (26) and Hansraj (28). During the raid, authorities confiscated substantial evidence, including Rs 1 lakh in cash, five mobile phones valued at approximately Rs 5 lakh, and a vehicle believed to have been purchased with illicit funds. Notably, the police also recovered a staggering 82 SIM cards issued from various states, underscoring the sophisticated nature of their fraudulent activities.
Scale of the Fraud and Investigation Details
Tonk Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar Meena revealed that a total of 404 complaints had been filed against the accused on the National Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). These complaints include cyber fraud cases amounting to Rs 2.4 crore, though the overall estimated scam value is much higher. A formal case has been registered at the Dooni police station, and investigations are actively ongoing to uncover other potential members of this criminal network.
Public Advisory and Preventive Measures
In light of this case, SP Meena issued a crucial advisory to the public, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity vigilance. He urged citizens to avoid sharing OTPs or opening suspicious APK files from unknown sources. Additionally, he encouraged anyone who suspects they have been targeted by cyber fraud to promptly report the incident by calling the toll-free number 1930, which is dedicated to handling such complaints efficiently.
This arrest serves as a stark reminder of the growing threat of online scams and the critical role of law enforcement in safeguarding digital spaces. The Tonk police's proactive efforts in dismantling this network are expected to prevent further financial losses and enhance public awareness about cyber safety practices.
