In a significant move to modernize security and streamline operations, the Tiruchirappalli International Airport has rolled out a new biometric access control system for its personnel. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has installed these automated gates specifically for airport staff, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, airline employees, and other officials.
How the New Biometric System Works
The advanced system completely replaces the older method of manual verification of Airport Entry Passes (AEP) by CISF personnel. Now, authorized individuals can gain entry by using retina and fingerprint authentication at dedicated biometric passages. These have been set up at both the departure and arrival gates of the airport's new passenger terminal.
The process is straightforward and swift. Staff members simply need to scan their identification at the gate. The gate, which glows blue as a default standby color, turns green the moment the biometric verification is successfully completed, granting instant access.
Addressing Security and Staffing Challenges
Airport Director S.S. Raju highlighted the multiple benefits of this automation. He stated that the system is designed to ensure more secure access control while making entry easier for daily staff and significantly reducing the workload on the CISF. Officials confirmed that this initiative will save considerable time and reduce the need for CISF deployment at these entry points.
The introduction of this technology comes at a crucial time, as the airport is grappling with a shortage of CISF personnel. Currently, Trichy airport operates with 373 CISF staff members against a sanctioned strength of 385. Furthermore, a recent survey conducted by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has revised the required CISF strength for the new terminal to a much higher figure of 738, underscoring the need for efficiency-boosting measures like automation.
Additional Developments at the Terminal
In related news, the airport director also inaugurated a new eatery within the terminal building. He announced plans to open four more retail shops in the arrival and departure areas soon, aiming to enhance passenger amenities and overall airport experience.
The deployment of biometric gates marks a key step in Trichy airport's journey towards becoming a smarter and more efficient aviation hub, balancing robust security with operational fluidity.
