WhatsApp Unveils High-Security 'Strict Account Settings' Feature

Meta's WhatsApp messaging service has rolled out a new feature called Strict Account Settings, designed to provide users with an advanced security mode. This initiative places WhatsApp among other US tech companies offering enhanced protections against cyber threats, albeit with potentially restrictive user experiences. The feature is set to be gradually introduced in the coming weeks, accessible via a one-click button in the app's settings menu to activate multiple defence mechanisms.

Enhanced Protection for High-Risk Users

In a recent blogpost, WhatsApp emphasized its commitment to privacy through default end-to-end encryption. However, the company acknowledged that certain users, such as journalists or public-facing figures, may require extreme safeguards against rare and highly-sophisticated cyber attacks. The Strict Account Settings feature addresses this need by locking specific account settings to their most restrictive options, thereby limiting some functionalities of the app.

Key Features of Strict Account Settings

When enabled, this feature implements several security measures:

  • Blocking media and attachments from unknown users.
  • Disabling link previews, which are thumbnails that appear when links are shared in chats.
  • Silencing calls from unknown users.

These actions are targeted at mitigating potential surveillance and aiding advanced hackers. To activate Strict Account Settings, users must navigate to Settings > Privacy > Advanced within the app.

WhatsApp's Commitment to Cybersecurity

WhatsApp stated in its blogpost, "Strict Account Settings is one of many ways we're working to protect you from the most sophisticated of cyber threats." This move aligns with broader industry trends, as Meta becomes the third major US tech company to offer such security enhancements for high-risk users. Previously, Apple introduced Lockdown Mode in 2022, and Google's Android platform launched Advanced Protection Mode for users with heightened security awareness.

The introduction of Strict Account Settings underscores WhatsApp's ongoing efforts to balance user convenience with robust security, particularly in an era of increasing digital threats. As cyber attacks grow more sophisticated, features like this aim to empower users to take proactive steps in safeguarding their personal information and communications.
