The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has announced a comprehensive initiative to desilt all manholes across Bengaluru by the end of May. This move aims to prevent blockages and ensure the smooth flow of sewage, particularly ahead of the monsoon season.
BWSSB's Crackdown on Illegal Connections
In the past year, BWSSB has intensified its enforcement against households that have illegally connected rainwater pipelines to the sewerage network instead of storm water drains. Such connections have been a major cause of sewer overflows and flooding during heavy rains.
Key Actions Taken
- Identification and penalization of violators.
- Disconnection of illegal rainwater connections.
- Awareness campaigns to educate residents about proper drainage practices.
The board has urged citizens to cooperate and report any illegal connections to ensure a robust drainage system.
Desilting Schedule
BWSSB has deployed multiple teams to cover all wards in the city. The desilting process involves removing accumulated debris, silt, and other obstructions from manholes. The target completion date is May 31, 2026, before the onset of the southwest monsoon.
Residents are advised to avoid dumping solid waste into drains, as this contributes to clogging. The board has also reminded property owners to ensure their rainwater downpipes are directed to storm water drains, not the sewer system.
This initiative is part of a larger effort to modernize Bengaluru's aging sewerage infrastructure and mitigate urban flooding risks.
