Seventy-seven percent of data center experts in India anticipate at least a sixfold increase in data center interconnect bandwidth over the next five years. This growth is primarily driven by AI workloads. Fifty-two percent indicate that upcoming builds will be designed exclusively for AI processing.

The expansion of AI positions data center interconnect and optical backbone architectures at the core of India's digital economy. This development requires operators to think beyond traditional network planning approaches.

The Emerging Neoscaler Opportunity

An important trend is the rise of neoscalers. These specialized AI compute providers, GPU-as-a-Service platforms, and edge cloud operators position themselves between hyperscalers and enterprises. Unlike hyperscalers who often build their own infrastructure, neoscalers typically rely on service providers for connectivity.

This creates substantial wholesale bandwidth opportunities for service providers. These opportunities include high-capacity wavelength services and dedicated optical connectivity between distributed compute locations. Service providers who can deliver these capabilities with appropriate service levels and operational agility stand to benefit significantly.

India's Network Readiness for AI

Recognizing the need for AI-ready networks, sixty-four percent of Indian data center experts indicated plans to build dedicated fiber networks specifically supporting AI workloads. Maintaining fiber rollout momentum remains crucial. Policy frameworks under the National Telecom Policy 2025 and ongoing Right of Way streamlining efforts will enable a more conducive environment for improved connectivity.

As optical networks evolve toward higher capacities and automation, and as policy frameworks continue to mature, India positions itself to build one of the world's most advanced network fabrics. With a smart network foundation established and collaboration across the wider ecosystem, India will achieve its broader digital ambitions.
