Karnataka is set to receive 1,243 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations under the central government's PM E-DRIVE scheme, aimed at promoting electric mobility across the country. The initiative, part of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) India program, will significantly enhance the state's EV charging infrastructure.
Key Highlights of the Scheme
The PM E-DRIVE scheme, approved by the Union Cabinet, focuses on expanding EV charging networks in urban and semi-urban areas. Karnataka, being a leader in EV adoption, will benefit from a substantial allocation of chargers. The chargers will be installed at strategic locations, including highways, commercial complexes, and residential areas.
Impact on EV Adoption
With the addition of these chargers, Karnataka aims to address range anxiety among EV users, encouraging more people to switch to electric vehicles. The state government has also been proactive in promoting EV policies, including subsidies and tax exemptions.
The chargers will cater to different vehicle types, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and cars. The installation process will be overseen by state nodal agencies in collaboration with private players.
This move aligns with India's goal of achieving 30% EV penetration by 2030. Karnataka currently has over 2 lakh registered EVs, and the new infrastructure is expected to boost this number further.
