Kochi Metro Partners with IISc for AI-Driven Sustainable Mobility Research
Kochi Metro & IISc Sign MoU for AI-Powered Urban Mobility

Kochi Metro and IISc Bengaluru Forge Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Urban Mobility

In a significant move to enhance urban transportation systems, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, on Friday. This collaboration is set to drive joint research and implementation efforts focused on sustainable urban mobility and public transport systems.

Combining Expertise for Data-Driven Solutions

Under this MoU, KMRL will leverage its hands-on operational experience in developing multimodal transport networks, while IISc will contribute its cutting-edge data-driven research capabilities. The partnership aims to tackle pressing urban challenges through evidence-based approaches, integrating advanced technologies to revolutionize public transport.

The collaboration will concentrate on several key areas:

  • Sustainable mobility planning to reduce environmental impact.
  • Optimization of transport operations for efficiency and reliability.
  • Application of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), internet of things (IoT), blockchain, simulation modeling, and intelligent decision-support systems.

Addressing Real-World Urban Challenges

Speaking at the event in Kaloor, Ashish Verma, a professor of transportation planning and policy at IISc Bengaluru, emphasized the broader implications of mobility. "Mobility is not just about transport — it is deeply connected to public health, air quality, climate resilience, and urban liveability," Verma stated. He highlighted that Kochi serves as an ideal testbed for demonstrating sustainable and resilient urban mobility solutions.

"Using real-world data, simulation models, and AI-driven tools, we assess the impact of transport interventions on accessibility, equity, congestion, emissions, and disaster resilience," Verma added, underscoring the partnership's goal to resolve practical urban issues through innovative research.

Updates on Kochi Metro Expansion Projects

During the same event, KMRL managing director Loknath Behera provided updates on the metro's expansion phases. He announced that Phase II of the Kochi Metro project, which will extend services from JLN Stadium Metro station to Kakkanad, is targeted for completion by December 2026.

Behera noted that civil works are progressing day and night, but land acquisition issues have posed challenges at two proposed stations: Chembukku and Padamugal. KMRL has yet to acquire the required land parcels at these locations, which has slowed down station construction in those stretches.

Additionally, Behera revealed that a detailed project report for the third phase of the Kochi Metro is expected to be finalized by March 14 this year, marking another step forward in the city's transport infrastructure development.

This partnership between KMRL and IISc represents a forward-thinking approach to urban mobility, combining academic research with practical implementation to create smarter, more sustainable cities for the future.
