Nagpur Metro Phase 3 to Study Extension to Tekadi Fata on Kamptee Road
Nagpur Metro Phase 3 to Study Tekadi Fata Extension

Nagpur: The proposed extension of the Nagpur Metro corridor on Kamptee Road beyond Kanhan town up to Tekadi Fata will be examined during planning of Phase 3 of the project, MahaMetro has told minister of state Ashish Jaiswal.

Official Communication

On Saturday, Jaiswal issued a public statement saying Metro had recently written to him. MahaMetro's director (project) Rajeev Tyagi mentioned that the Comprehensive Mobility Plan for the Nagpur Metropolitan Region had already proposed extending the Metro corridor up to Kanhan town, and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this stretch had been prepared and submitted to the state for further action.

The push to take the line further, up to Tekadi Fata, goes beyond the presently proposed terminal point. However, "the feasibility and travel demand for further extension up to Tekadi Fata shall be examined during planning of Nagpur Metro Rail Project Phase 3 through appropriate traffic and feasibility studies," the letter stated.

Background of the Demand

The MahaMetro reply was triggered by two communications. One was a letter Jaiswal wrote to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on February 16, stating that while the Automotive Square-Kanhan Metro stretch is already in progress, Kandri (K) town near Kanhan, along with Tekadi (Ko Kh) and Gondegaon, have become populous habitations. Extending the corridor up to Tekadi Fata would unlock further development.

The second was a representation by Kandri (K) nagar sevak Atul Ramesh Hajare, dated February 15, making the same demand. Jaiswal's letter was forwarded by the Chief Minister's Office to MahaMetro for examination.

Benefits for Commuters

For commuters along the Kamptee Road corridor, the Kanhan stretch of Phase 2 already means a direct rail link to the city core. A further extension to Tekadi Fata would bring three more populous settlements within walking distance of a Metro station and shorten the daily commute for thousands of workers and students who currently rely on shared autos and buses to reach Automotive Square.

Mahametro also eyes NMC land at Bhandewadi.
