Pune Metro Leak: AC Drain Pipe Choked, Not Rain, Says Maha Metro

A choked drain pipe of the air-conditioning system in a Pune Metro rake resulted in water leakage inside a coach on Thursday evening, according to Maha Metro officials. The incident occurred around 6:40 pm after the train departed from Ramwadi station heading towards Vanaz.

Viral Video Misattributed to Heavy Rain

A video of the water leakage in the Metro coach went viral on social media platforms on Saturday, with claims that Friday afternoon’s heavy downpour had triggered the leakage. However, Maha Metro officials issued a clarification, stating that the malfunction of the AC’s condensation system caused the leakage and that it had no connection with the heavy rainfall on Friday.

Chandrashekhar Tambhavekar, head of Maha Metro’s public relations department, said, “The videos in circulation with the claim that there was seepage in the Metro coach during Friday’s rain is incorrect. There was seepage in a train after it departed from Ramwadi on Thursday evening. The train was stopped at the next station after the seepage was detected, and staffers attended to the problem. It left for Vanaz after cleaning was done. A directive has been issued to check the functioning of air-conditioning in the particular rake and conduct inspections of other rakes.”

Commuters Demand Regular Maintenance

Commuters expressed concern and urged the Metro administration to perform regular maintenance of all passenger-centric systems. Vishal Shinde, a frequent traveler on the Ramwadi-Vanaz route, said that regular checks could prevent such water leakages. “The leakage occurred during rush hour. The viral video shows that the train was full. The passenger services should be world-class,” Shinde remarked.

The Metro’s daily average footfall has been around two lakh for the past two months. Among other improvements, commuters are demanding better internet connectivity on Metro’s underground stretches and stations. Improvement in last-mile connectivity is another key demand from regular users.

Uber Launches Metro Ticketing Facility

In a related development, Uber has announced the launch of a Metro ticketing facility on its app, enabling commuters to purchase tickets without waiting in queues. Pune is the fifth city after Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai to offer Metro ticketing through the Uber app.
