Nintendo Switch 2 Update Adds Team Racing to Mario Kart World's Knockout Tour
Mario Kart World Update Adds Team Racing on Switch 2

Nintendo has launched a significant free update for its popular racing game, Mario Kart World, on the Nintendo Switch 2 console. This latest version, numbered 1.5.0, brings a highly anticipated team racing feature to the Knockout Tour mode, expanding the game's multiplayer capabilities for both local wireless and online play.

What's New in the Mario Kart World Update?

The update introduces a collaborative racing experience where players can now form teams in Knockout Tour, a mode that previously only supported individual competition. This enhancement allows for more strategic gameplay and social interaction among friends and online competitors.

Enhanced Multiplayer Options

Players can now organize Knockout Tour races with team configurations that include two teams of 12 drivers each, three teams of 8 drivers each, or four teams of 6 drivers each. If the required number of human players isn't available, computer-controlled drivers will automatically fill the remaining spots to ensure full races.

This team-based approach works seamlessly across both local wireless connections and online multiplayer sessions, giving players flexibility in how they choose to compete with friends.

How Knockout Tour Team Racing Works

Knockout Tour remains a high-stakes racing mode where 24 drivers compete across multiple global courses without pauses. The elimination mechanics continue with five checkpoints throughout the race, where drivers falling below specific positions get eliminated. The visual interface now displays team colors in the top-right corner, allowing players to track their team's performance as they approach each checkpoint.

The race continues until only four drivers remain, with the bottom four being eliminated at each checkpoint. What's new is that victory is now determined by team performance rather than individual achievement.

Team Scoring System

The scoring mechanism for team races differs significantly from other game modes. Top finishers earn substantially more points: 50 points for first place, 40 for second, 35 for third, and 30 for fourth. Drivers who don't survive past the first checkpoint receive just 1 point, emphasizing the importance of team coordination and strategy.

An automatic victory is awarded if all four drivers from the same team successfully pass through the final checkpoint, encouraging cohesive team play throughout the race.

Social Features and Coordination

Nintendo has integrated GameChat functionality to help players coordinate better during online sessions from different locations. For eliminated players, the update allows continued spectator participation with camera controls to follow preferred drivers and a selection of comments to share with other spectators.

Adding friends has been streamlined through the system's HOME Menu, where players can select their user icon on My Page and follow intuitive instructions to send and accept friend requests.

Technical Improvements and Bug Fixes

Beyond the team racing feature, update 1.5.0 addresses several technical issues that have been affecting gameplay. Notable fixes include resolving a problem where the game would occasionally crash when players selected Kamek on Choco Mountain course.

The update also corrects display issues with rating information when joining "Everyone" in "Online Play" while in a room. Multiple other general enhancements have been implemented to improve overall stability and gameplay experience.

Language Support Expansion

Nintendo's official support page confirms that the update includes Polish language support, making the game more accessible to players in Poland and Polish-speaking communities worldwide.

System Requirements and Compatibility

For Mario Kart World, each Nintendo Switch 2 system requires its own copy of the game to participate in multiplayer sessions. However, players can bring friends online if they're playing on the same system. While some other Nintendo games support GameShare functionality, Mario Kart World maintains its current access requirements.

This substantial update represents Nintendo's ongoing commitment to enhancing the Mario Kart World experience, particularly focusing on social and competitive multiplayer elements that have made the franchise so popular among gaming communities.
