Roblox Unveils Makeup Category for Avatars with Layered Cosmetics System
Roblox has officially launched a Makeup category within its Avatar Marketplace, marking a significant expansion in virtual customization. This innovative feature allows users to apply layered cosmetic items to various parts of their avatars, including eyes, lips, face, eyebrows, and eyelashes. The rollout begins with more than 100 items crafted by community creators, with plans for continuous additions from both independent designers and established brands.
How Roblox Avatar Makeup Works: A Modular and Layered Approach
The new Makeup category is designed to be modular, offering five distinct subcategories: Eyes, Face, Lips, Eyelashes, and Eyebrows. Users can mix and match items across these sections to create unique looks. Creators have the option to provide full-face bundles that combine elements from multiple subcategories into a single package. Unlike many platforms where makeup simply recolors or replaces avatar features, Roblox employs a sophisticated layered system. This allows users to stack items and adjust their order for greater customization.
Roblox avatars already store data on facial feature positions, such as eyes and mouths, which the Makeup system leverages to ensure items fit accurately across all avatar types. Additionally, creators can utilize physically based rendering effects to add intricate details like gloss, shimmer, or metallic finishes to their cosmetic designs.
Functional Applications and Creative Possibilities
Beyond personal expression, the Makeup feature has practical uses in gameplay. For instance, face paint can designate opposing teams in competitive games, sports simulations can incorporate eye black, and camouflage options may offer tactical advantages in first-person shooter titles. On the creative front, the layered system empowers users to build diverse character aesthetics, from elaborate fantasy designs to minimalist styles, by combining available items.
Monetization and Brand Opportunities in Virtual Cosmetics
The launch opens a new revenue stream for creators on Roblox. They can list time-limited items at discounted prices, providing users with a low-commitment way to experiment with styles or acquire seasonal looks. Brands are also playing a pivotal role in this initiative. e.l.f. Cosmetics is among the first participants, collaborating with creators to develop virtual looks linked to its real-world products. The company has integrated the feature into two in-game experiences: e.l.f. Up and Glow Up.
Patrick O'Keefe, chief integrated marketing officer of e.l.f. Beauty, commented on the feature, stating, “Roblox Makeup is our love letter to a community that doesn't follow culture; it creates it. As identity moves seamlessly between digital and physical worlds, e.l.f. shows up across both, giving our community the tools to express who they are, everywhere they exist.”
User Engagement and Market Insights
Roblox highlights that avatar customization is already a major user activity on the platform. In the first half of 2025, users updated their avatars an average of 274 million times per day. Research conducted by Roblox and Ipsos reveals that 58% of Gen Z Roblox users surveyed had worn makeup in the past three months, with 84% of that group using it several times a week. Approximately 87% of respondents expressed willingness to purchase makeup on Roblox monthly, and 85% reported that customizing their avatar's makeup increased their engagement with games.
On the brand side, about 83% of Gen Z makeup users showed interest in using products from their favorite makeup brands on their avatars. Moreover, 76% of surveyed makeup users and 71% of all Gen Z Roblox users surveyed indicated that applying a brand's makeup to their avatar made them more likely to consider that brand in real life.
