Named the "Michelangelo Dome," this advanced system is designed to act as a comprehensive, multi-layered shield for protecting metropolitan areas and vital national infrastructure from modern aerial threats.

The newly launched platform draws inspiration from the renowned Israeli "Iron Dome" but aims for a broader scope. The Michelangelo Dome is engineered to create a seamless defensive network by integrating data and assets from space, air, land, and sea domains. Its core function is to use AI to detect, track, intercept, and neutralise a diverse spectrum of dangers, ranging from sophisticated missile attacks to coordinated swarms of drones.
Roberto Cingolani, the Chief Executive Officer of Leonardo, highlighted the system's collaborative design philosophy. He stated that the architecture is "open," which is a crucial feature for NATO allies. This means the system can be configured to work alongside and integrate with the existing defense protocols and equipment of any partner nation, promoting interoperability and collective security.

"In a world where threats evolve rapidly and become ever more complex—and where defending is costlier than attacking—defense must innovate, anticipate and embrace international cooperation," Cingolani told Reuters. Emphasising this tailored approach, the company will form a dedicated joint team with the Italian armed forces to design the specific architecture that meets Italy's national defense requirements.
Leonardo has set an ambitious timeline for the project. The goal is to have components of the Michelangelo Dome become partially operational in the near future. The complete, fully functional system is projected to be deployed and ready for action by the year 2028.

The development of the Michelangelo Dome occurs alongside other major national initiatives for space-based defense tracking. Earlier this year, reports emerged that Elon Musk's SpaceX was in line to potentially secure up to $2 billion in U.S. federal funding for a related project.
As per The Wall Street Journal, this American initiative, referred to as the 'Golden Dome' project under the previous administration, aims to develop a vast satellite network capable of tracking missiles and aircraft. This proposed system could eventually deploy about 600 satellites to enhance U.S. defense capabilities, with SpaceX also expected to play key roles in other classified Pentagon satellite programs.
