A significant fire incident occurred at the Machkund Hydroelectric Project in the Koraput district of Odisha on Saturday, causing panic within the power generation unit and critically affecting four employees due to suffocation, according to officials. Preliminary reports indicate that the blaze originated in the turbine section of the project.
An official stated, "Four workers reportedly got trapped and suffered breathing difficulties after dense smoke engulfed the area. They were immediately rescued by fellow staff and emergency responders and shifted to the community health centre at Lamtaput for treatment." The condition of the injured workers is being closely monitored at the hospital, and rescue and firefighting operations are continuing on a war footing, the official added.
The exact cause of the fire remained unclear until the time of filing this report. The Machkund Hydroelectric Project is one of the major power generation facilities in southern Odisha and shares operational significance with the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh.
