In a landmark achievement for the nation's innovation landscape, India has witnessed a historic surge in intellectual property creation. For the first time ever, the number of patent applications filed in a financial year has crossed the one lakh threshold, underscoring the country's rapid evolution into a global research and development powerhouse.
Record-Breaking Numbers Across IP Categories
The annual report for the financial year 2024-25, released by the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, Trademarks, and Geographical Indications, reveals an impressive growth story. Patent applications soared to over 1.1 lakh in FY25, marking a significant leap from the 92,168 applications filed in the previous year. This represents a growth of nearly 20%.
Perhaps the most encouraging statistic is the dominant role played by homegrown talent. Domestic innovators were responsible for nearly 62% of all patent filings. This shift highlights a major move towards self-reliance in innovation and points to a rapidly expanding domestic research and development base.
The growth was not confined to patents alone. Overall, intellectual property rights filings saw an 18% increase, reaching 7.4 lakh applications in FY25 from 6.3 lakh in FY24. Healthy growth was registered across all major categories, including designs, trademarks, and geographical indications.
Designs and Trademarks Show Explosive Growth
Reflecting a booming consumer and manufacturing sector focused on aesthetics and industrial innovation, design applications witnessed a staggering 41.5% jump. Filings rose to 43,005 in FY25 from 30,389 in the preceding year.
Trademark applications, the most widely used form of commercial IP in India, grew by 16%, increasing from 4.7 lakh to 5.5 lakh. Furthermore, filings for copyrights and geographical indications (GIs) each rose by 20%. Copyright applications went up from 36,726 to 44,095, while GI applications more than doubled, climbing from 134 to 275. This underscores a rising recognition and legal protection for traditional knowledge and creative works.
Policy Reforms and Tech Drive the Momentum
The IP office has attributed this robust growth to a series of strategic policy and administrative reforms. Key among them are the Patents (Amendment) Rules, 2024, which streamlined patent prosecution processes. The adoption of international classification under the Locarno Agreement for Industrial Designs also simplified design filings.
Technological adoption played a pivotal role in facilitating this expansion. The introduction of AI-powered tools like the Trade Mark Search Technology and the IP Saarthi chatbot has significantly boosted examination speed and accuracy. These tools provide round-the-clock support to inventors, entrepreneurs, and legal stakeholders, making the IP filing process more efficient and accessible.
