Kolkata is breathing new life into neglected urban spaces with a community-driven fitness initiative beneath the Baguiati flyover near Joramandir. What was once a dead pocket under the flyover has been transformed into a free sports and recreation zone, backed by singer and local MLA Aditi Munshi.
Facilities and Features
The newly developed facility includes a turf space for football and cricket, along with dedicated skating and exercise zones aimed at encouraging fitness among residents of the densely populated Rajarhat-Gopalpur area. A pet-walking zone has also been created, and conservancy staff have been deployed to ensure the area remains clean and litter-free.
Free Access and Booking
According to the shift-in-charge, the facility is free for all users, with only prior booking required. It is open daily and is emerging as a vibrant community hub where young people and families can gather for sports, exercise, and recreation.
Urban Innovation Amid Challenges
As Kolkata continues to face growing population pressure and civic challenges, such projects are being seen as innovative ways to improve urban life while promoting health, fitness, and community engagement. This initiative demonstrates how underutilized spaces can be repurposed to benefit the public.
