Varanasi: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sah-Sarkaryawah Krishna Gopal, while addressing Vigyan Bharati's 7th national convention at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on Sunday, stated that India's scientific history is as ancient as its cultural heritage. He referenced the guiding principle, "Science gives us height, and spirituality gives us depth," and urged students and researchers to study India's scientific heritage and pass it on to future generations.
India's Scientific Tradition: From Ancient to Modern
Speaking during a session on "India's scientific tradition: From the ancient to the modern age" at the convention, Gopal called upon scientists, academicians, researchers, and students from across the country to delve into India's scientific history, emphasizing it is as ancient as its cultural heritage. He stressed that within the Indian knowledge system, science and spirituality have always been complementary.
Kashi as a Living Cultural Hub
Describing Kashi as the world's oldest living city, Gopal noted that cultural and intellectual traditions dating back thousands of years continue to thrive there today. He articulated that in Indian philosophy, science is not confined solely to laboratories; rather, all disciplines of knowledge—including music, dance, grammar, Ayurveda, mathematics, and philosophy—form part of its broader scientific canvas. He asserted that the core objective of the Indian knowledge tradition has always been public welfare, environmental conservation, and the greater good of humanity.
Inspiration from Eminent Scientists
Recounting anecdotes from the lives of eminent scientists such as Mahendra Lal Sircar, Jagadish Chandra Bose, CV Raman, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, Vikram Sarabhai, Satish Dhawan, APJ Abdul Kalam, GN Ramachandran, Anna Mani, Atma Ram, and Yellapragada Subbarow, Gopal highlighted how Indian minds achieved world-class breakthroughs despite limited resources.
