SpaceX Offers Free Starlink Internet in Iran Amid Blackout, Following Trump's Hint
SpaceX Gives Free Starlink in Iran After Trump's Talk

SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, is now offering free Starlink satellite internet service in Iran. This move comes as the country faces a severe internet blackout that has lasted for days. Bloomberg reported this development, citing Ahmad Ahmadian, the executive director of the US group Holistic Resilience.

Free Service Amid Internet Shutdown

Ahmadian confirmed that SpaceX has waived the Starlink subscription fee in Iran. This means Iranians who have Starlink receivers can access the internet without paying any charges. However, Starlink has not officially confirmed this offer yet.

The decision follows recent comments from former US President Donald Trump. Last week, Trump told reporters he might speak to Elon Musk about using Starlink to assist people in Iran. He praised Musk's capabilities and his company's expertise in such matters.

Smuggled Receivers Enable Access

Despite a ban on Starlink receivers in Iran, many devices have been smuggled across the nation's borders. Ahmadian estimates that more than 50,000 units are currently available in the country. This underground network allows Iranians to bypass government restrictions and connect to the global internet.

Starlink as a Tool of Soft Power

The Bloomberg report highlights how Starlink's service in Iran and other conflict zones demonstrates its role as a soft power tool. Elon Musk, the world's richest person, and the US government are leveraging this technology to influence global events. The fast-growing internet service is becoming a key asset in diplomatic and humanitarian efforts.

Similar Move in Venezuela

Earlier this month, Starlink announced free internet service in Venezuela until February 3, 2026. This announcement came after a swift US military operation against Venezuela on January 3, which resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, First Lady Cilia Flores.

Starlink shared a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating it is providing free broadband service to ensure continued connectivity for the people of Venezuela. Elon Musk reposted this with a message of support for the Venezuelan people.

The company's actions in both Iran and Venezuela show a pattern of using satellite internet to support populations during crises. This strategy underscores the growing importance of technology in global politics and humanitarian aid.
