Apple Unveils iOS 26.5 Public Beta with Major Updates

Apple has officially launched the first public beta of iOS 26.5, following closely on the heels of the developer beta released earlier this week. This update brings significant enhancements, including a new feature in Apple Maps and the groundwork for in-app advertising, alongside improved messaging security and compliance with European regulations.

Enhanced Apple Maps with Ads and Smart Suggestions

The headline addition in iOS 26.5 is the "Suggested Places" feature in Apple Maps, which recommends nearby restaurants and other points of interest based on local trends and your recent search history. These suggestions appear instantly when you tap the search bar, making it easier to discover new spots. However, Maps isn't just getting smarter recommendations; Apple is also introducing ads within the app. Confirmed back in March as part of Apple's strategy to expand advertising beyond the App Store and Apple News, these ads will be displayed at the top of search results and within the Suggested Places list. They are tailored using your approximate location, search terms, and current map view. Apple assures users that every ad will be clearly labeled, and your location data and ad interactions will not be linked to your Apple Account, maintaining privacy.

RCS Encryption Returns for Cross-Platform Messaging

In a move to enhance messaging security, iOS 26.5 re-enables end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS messages between iPhone and Android users. This feature was initially tested in the iOS 26.4 beta but was removed before the public release. Now, E2EE is enabled by default in the Messages settings, ensuring that conversations across platforms are encrypted from the outset, providing a more secure communication experience.

EU-Specific Features and Minor Tweaks

Specifically for the European Union, Apple is testing interoperability features mandated by the Digital Markets Act. These include the ability to push Live Activities to third-party wearables, a new addition for iOS 26.5. Other smaller improvements in this beta include automatic Bluetooth pairing for Magic Keyboard over USB-C, an Inuktitut keyboard layout, and new attachment transfer options when switching from an iPhone to an Android device, streamlining the user experience.

How to Access the Beta

To try out the iOS 26.5 public beta, users can sign up through Apple's Beta Software Program website. This allows early adopters to explore the new features and provide feedback before the official release. Apple continues to refine its operating system with these updates, balancing innovation with user privacy and regulatory compliance.
