Maang-hilario Mango Prices Surge to Rs 900/Dozen in Goa as Season Ends
Maang-hilario Mango Prices Surge in Goa

Panaji: The maang-hilario mango has entered its final week of availability this season, with prices surging to around Rs 900 per dozen amid dwindling supplies in Goa’s retail markets.

At the start of the season, the variety sold for Rs 400-600 per dozen, depending on size. Traders said prices have risen steadily in recent days instead of easing — a trend that usually occurs when newer mango varieties arrive in the market.

“This is the last week of maang-hilario mangoes. Demand is very high and supplies have almost run out, so prices have increased. After this week, the variety will no longer be available,” fruit vendor Vishnu Talikoti said.

The unusual price trend has surprised vendors and consumers alike, especially since other varieties such as kesar, dasheri and langra are already available. Typically, the arrival of newer varieties softens prices of early-season mangoes, as was seen with the mancurad variety in May.

Traders attribute the sustained demand to the fruit’s limited seasonal availability and growing popularity among local consumers.

“Maang-hilario is considered the second-favourite mango after mancurad. I always look for it during its short harvest season. Even when varieties like kesar and dasheri are available, Goan mangoes remain in high demand,” consumer Gletta Soares said.
