12th May Sahitya Mela to Discuss Constitutional Democracy

The '12th May Sahitya Mela' is set to take place on May 16 and 17 at RN Shetty Hall in Hubballi, announced key organiser Basavaraj Sulibhavi. The event aims to unite writers, thinkers, activists, and citizens to discuss the theme 'Attack on Constitutional Democracy'. Sulibhavi highlighted that the two-day gathering underscores growing concerns over the state of democratic values in India and the challenges confronting the Constitution. It seeks to foster dialogue on fundamental issues such as equality, justice, freedom, and social harmony, which underpin the Indian democratic system.

Focus on Democratic Principles

The Constitution of India embodies a vision of inclusivity and equal rights for all citizens. However, recent socio-political developments, including cultural intolerance and divisive tendencies, have raised serious questions about its effective implementation. This event will serve as a platform to examine these concerns and explore ways to safeguard democratic principles, Sulibhavi stated while addressing reporters.

Programme Highlights

Another organiser, Mahesh Pattar, elaborated that the programme will feature a series of panel discussions, seminars, poetry sessions, storytelling events, and cultural activities. Additionally, book exhibitions and art displays will be organised. Eminent intellectuals expected to participate include Justice BG Kolse Patil, retired judge of the Bombay High Court; Justice H Nagamohan Das; former bureaucrat V Balasubramanian; prominent writers like Kum Veerabhadrappa, Mudnakudu Chinnaswamy, Dinesh Amin Mattu, and Banjagere Jayaprakash; and social activists such as Sayyed Khasim Rasool Ilyas from Delhi and SR Hiremath.
