Bhopal: I had seen storms, but nothing like this! Nothing, not even the countless Nor’westers that I grew up experiencing in my hometown Kolkata, could have prepared me for what was to unfold around half past noon in my neighbourhood on Bhopal’s outskirts.
The Storm's Onset
It started with the skies going menacingly overcast and the wind picking up all of a sudden as I paced my terrace holding my steaming cup of tea. Before I knew what was coming, a strong burst of wind hit me in the face, sending me scurrying indoors.
I stood paralysed and petrified for a few moments as a massive storm arrived, rattling my doors and windows like those typical ambience-setting scenes in horror flicks.
Struggling Against the Winds
Before I could close my doors and windows, the howling winds slammed a door shut, right in my face, giving me no time to respond as it jammed with a deafening bang. I vainly tried to shove it open but my shoulders were simply no match for the winds blowing at full blast, accompanied by a sharp burst of rain.
As I tried to close the door to my kitchen balcony, I could feel the heaviness and full force of the whistling winds pushing me away. I had no way to check the exact speed at which the winds were gusting but they sure felt to me to be going at a rate of knots.
The Aftermath
Outside, the skies had been shrouded by large columns of dark rain clouds, while the winds came in waves, each one stronger than the last, literally piercing my eardrums with their hissing and whistling sounds. After raging for what seemed an eternity, the storm finally blew over, leaving behind a trail of deathly silence, scattered litter on streets, flooded terraces and a jammed door.
All was well again after what felt like a near-brush with the apocalypse.
