CDB to Reduce Fireworks Noise, Enhance Visual Appeal

Thrissur: Encouraged by the positive response from temples under its jurisdiction, the Cochin Devaswom Board (CDB) has decided to move forward with a proposal to reduce noise levels in fireworks displays, transforming them into more visually appealing spectacles while minimizing accident risks.

Meeting with Temple Representatives

The board convened a meeting on Monday with representatives from the advisory committees of various temples under its purview. CDB President K Ravindran expressed his delight at the overwhelming support from attendees, though some emphasized that temple rituals must not be compromised. The CDB oversees over 400 temples, with approximately 150 conducting festivals featuring fireworks.

Global Examples and Local Initiatives

Ravindran noted that fireworks displays are presented as visual treats at events like the Olympics and many global celebrations. Festivals such as 'Thrissur Pooram' are even observed in cities like Dubai, where fireworks are primarily visual entertainments. He highlighted an initiative at the recent Koodalmanikyam temple festival in Irinjalakuda, where noise levels were successfully reduced.

The board plans to hold detailed discussions with officials and technical experts soon. "We lack expertise in developing low-noise, high-visual fireworks, so we need to bring in specialists," Ravindran said.
