Flamingos Flock to Nandur Madhyameshwar Sanctuary in Rare Summer Sighting

Nashik: Thousands of flamingos have transformed the Nandur Madhyameshwar bird sanctuary into a sea of vivid pink. Though these migratory birds typically depart by March, their arrival in late April has turned the expansive wetland into a hotspot for birdwatchers and photographers, while signalling a major victory for local conservation efforts.

The flamingos were spotted at the Godavari–Kadwa confluence on April 28, a sighting that caught wildlife officials by surprise. Their presence is being credited to a thriving habitat, specifically sustained water levels and an abundance of algae—the birds' primary food source.

"The rare summer congregation points to a strengthening ecosystem," a forest official said. "Adequate water and improved feeding conditions, resulting from ongoing conservation measures, have supported the birds well beyond their usual migration window."

Known as the "Bharatpur of Maharashtra," the sanctuary has seen a surge in visitors during the early morning and evening hours. Authorities believe recent interventions, such as removal of invasive vegetation and the creation of shallow water zones, have significantly enhanced the habitat.

Conservation Success

Located in Niphad taluka, Nandur Madhyameshwar became Maharashtra's first Ramsar site in 2020. Home to 265 bird species, the sanctuary's current flamingo influx serves as a vivid reminder of the success of its ecological protection programmes. Keoladeo National Park, formerly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, in Rajasthan is a prime location to spot flamingos, particularly during winter. These migratory birds arrive between December and March to feed and breed in the park's wetlands. Visitors can witness flocks of flamingos alongside painted storks and other water birds, making it a must-visit spot during this peak season.

The unexpected summer presence of flamingos at Nandur Madhyameshwar underscores the importance of sustained conservation efforts. With continued habitat management, the sanctuary may become a year-round haven for these iconic pink birds, delighting nature enthusiasts and researchers alike.
