Araghchi Links World Cup Performance to National Honor

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Monday praised the national football team's performance in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G match against Belgium, framing it as part of a broader struggle to defend the honor and dignity of the Iranian people. In a post on X, Araghchi shared an AI-generated image depicting ethereal figures aiding Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand and used the hashtag #Minab168 to honor the 168 students killed in a February 2026 missile strike on a primary school in Minab.

"From the football pitch to the negotiating table to the battlefield, every step we take as Iranians is part of a larger struggle: defending the honour and dignity of our dear people," Araghchi wrote. His remarks came as Iran secured a 0-0 draw against Belgium, with Beiranvand making seven saves, including four diving stops and three high claims, preventing an estimated 1.70 goals. The goalkeeper's heroics earned him the 'Superior Player of the Match' award.

Parliament Speaker Invokes Minab Victims Ahead of US Talks

In a parallel show of national resilience, Iranian Parliament Speaker MB Ghalibaf invoked the Minab victims ahead of technical talks with the United States in Switzerland. In a post on X, Ghalibaf said he and the Iranian delegation carried the memory of the children of Minab and other martyrs during the negotiations. "I consider the innocent children of Minab and all the martyrs of dear Iran to be watching over my every action and behaviour at every moment. They see us and expect things of us. God forbid that I should ever bring shame to the innocent martyrs and the people of Iran," Ghalibaf wrote, also using the #Minab168 hashtag.

Beiranvand's Heroics Earn Iran a Point

Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand produced a standout performance at Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday, making seven saves and earning widespread praise. Belgium dominated possession early, with Maxim De Cuyper testing Beiranvand with a powerful long-range effort, but the Iranian shot-stopper was equal to the challenge. Iran threatened on the counterattack and thought they had taken the lead in the 24th minute when Mehdi Taremi converted a free-kick routine, but a VAR review ruled the goal out for offside.

The draw leaves Group G finely balanced, with Iran top on two points, Belgium second on two points, and New Zealand and Egypt both on one point. All four teams remain in contention for qualification heading into the final round of group-stage fixtures.
