Mumbai has been experiencing continuous rainfall for a second consecutive day, bringing significant relief from the preceding heatwave conditions. The city's residents welcomed the cool weather as the southwest monsoon finally showed signs of strengthening, albeit with a delay compared to its typical schedule.
Monsoon Arrival Delayed This Year
The southwest monsoon normally reaches Mumbai around June 10 each year. However, this year the onset has been delayed, with the rains only beginning in earnest later in the month. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon's progress has been sluggish due to unfavourable atmospheric conditions in the early part of June.
Despite the delay, the recent downpour has helped lower temperatures significantly. The maximum temperature in the city dropped to around 28 degrees Celsius on the second day of rains, compared to the mid-30s recorded earlier in the week. Humidity levels remain high, but the cooling effect has been widely appreciated.
Impact on Daily Life and Infrastructure
The rains have caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas of Mumbai, including parts of Dadar, Andheri, and Sion. Local train services, the city's lifeline, experienced minor delays on the Central and Western lines due to water on tracks. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deployed pumps and teams to clear water from affected roads and residential areas.
Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were briefly disrupted on the first day of heavy rain, with some flights diverted and others delayed. However, operations normalised by the second day as the intensity of rainfall reduced.
Forecast and Advisory
The IMD has predicted that light to moderate rain will continue over Mumbai and its suburbs for the next 48 hours. A yellow alert has been issued for the city, advising residents to stay cautious while commuting. The weather department also warned of possible gusty winds reaching 40-50 km/h in some areas.
According to an IMD official, "The monsoon trough is now active and is expected to bring widespread rainfall across the Konkan region, including Mumbai, over the next few days. The delay in onset has been compensated by the intensity of the current spell."
Residents Welcome the Change
Many Mumbaikars expressed relief on social media, sharing pictures and videos of the rain. The cool weather has also reduced the demand for electricity, providing some respite from frequent power cuts that plagued the city during the heatwave. However, authorities have cautioned against complacency, as heavy rain can lead to landslides in hilly areas and flooding in low-lying zones.
The BMC has advised people to avoid venturing into waterlogged areas and to stay away from unstable structures. Emergency response teams remain on standby to handle any situation arising from the continuing rainfall.
