Nashik's Mega Infrastructure Project: Outer Ring Road Targets 2027 Kumbh Mela Deadline
In a major infrastructure push, Nashik is set to get a comprehensive 66.15-kilometer outer ring road that will encircle the city, with authorities confirming it will be completed before the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2027. This massive project, designed specifically to alleviate traffic congestion during the enormous religious gathering, is being executed by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC).
Project Cost and Funding Structure
The total estimated cost for the outer ring road stands at a staggering Rs 7,922 crore, which encompasses both land acquisition expenses and civil construction works. A detailed breakdown reveals that the land acquisition component alone is projected to cost Rs 3,659.47 crore, which will be entirely funded by the Maharashtra state government.
Meanwhile, the civil works portion, amounting to Rs 4,262.64 crore, will be financed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This collaborative funding model ensures that both state and central resources are leveraged for this critical infrastructure development.
Land Acquisition Process and Farmer Engagement
The project requires acquisition of 386 hectares of land spread across 25 villages surrounding Nashik. Kumbh Mela Authority commissioner Shekhar Singh has confirmed that the administration has already initiated the land acquisition process and is actively engaged in discussions with farmers whose properties will be affected.
"We are in continuous communication with all stakeholders, including farmer groups who have expressed concerns," Singh stated. "Our officials are working diligently to address these issues and we are confident of reaching a mutual understanding. All compensation will be provided strictly according to government norms and regulations."
Strategic Route and Project Approval
The outer ring road will begin and end at Adgaon, creating a complete loop around Nashik. Its strategic route will pass through several key locations including:
- DRDO Junction
- Dindori Road
- Dakambale Shivar
- Peth-Gavalwadi
- Gangapur Road
- Govardhan
- Trimbak Road
- Belgaon Dhaga
- Vilholi
This ambitious proposal received formal approval last year from the state cabinet's infrastructure committee, which is headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The primary objectives are to reduce congestion on existing city roads and create alternative routes that can manage the extraordinary vehicular pressure expected during the Kumbh period.
Addressing Kumbh Mela Traffic Challenges
Nashik holds the distinction of being one of only four cities in India that host the Kumbh Mela every twelve years. While the 2015 edition witnessed approximately 2 crore devotees visiting the city, projections for the upcoming 2027 Kumbh indicate an unprecedented influx of more than 5 crore visitors.
This dramatic increase in anticipated footfall and vehicular traffic has prompted authorities to prioritize robust infrastructure and comprehensive traffic management systems. The outer ring road is expected to play a pivotal role in diverting heavy and long-distance traffic away from the city core, thereby significantly reducing pressure on existing arterial roads during the mela.
Officials emphasize that the project represents a long-term investment that will continue to benefit Nashik's traffic and transport network well beyond the Kumbh Mela. With a firm deadline set for March 2027, the completion of this outer ring road is viewed as essential infrastructure that will transform mobility in the region for decades to come.
