NHAI Fast-Tracks Major Highway Project to Connect Barabanki and Bahraich
The National Highways Authority of India is pushing ahead with a significant infrastructure initiative. They are accelerating the construction of a four-lane national highway, designated NH-927, linking Barabanki to Bahraich. This project carries an estimated price tag of Rs 6,927 crore.
Enhanced Connectivity and Reduced Travel Time
Once built, this highway promises to transform travel in the region. The current journey of 101 kilometres to Bahraich, which often takes several hours, is expected to be slashed to just about one hour. This dramatic reduction will benefit countless commuters and traders.
The improved route will serve the people of Barabanki, Bahraich, Gonda, and Balrampur directly. It will also provide major relief to those in Shravasti and nearby areas. Crucially, the project is set to significantly boost vehicular movement between India and Nepal, strengthening cross-border ties.
Project Details and Land Acquisition
For the construction, approximately 325 hectares of land have been identified. This includes both government and private property. The land will be used not only for the main four-lane carriageway but also for developing essential service lanes alongside it.
NHAI Project Director Nakul Prakash Verma provided key updates. After receiving a green light from the Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee, the project file was forwarded to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on November 6 last year. This step is for obtaining the final necessary approval.
Phased Development and Future Timeline
The massive highway will be developed in two distinct phases to manage the construction effectively.
- Phase One: This initial stage will cover the stretches from Barabanki to Jarwal and then from Jarwal to Bahraich.
- Phase Two: Details for the subsequent phase will be finalized as the project progresses.
Financial approval for the entire endeavor is anticipated by mid-2026. Once this clearance is secured, NHAI plans to immediately initiate the tendering process. Construction work is expected to begin shortly thereafter.
Long-Term Benefits and Capacity
The completed national highway is designed for longevity and heavy use. It will be capable of handling a substantial volume of traffic—up to 38,000 light and heavy vehicles daily. This capacity is expected to meet transportation needs for several decades to come.
The project represents a major investment in the region's infrastructure. It aims to ease congestion, promote economic activity, and create a faster, more reliable link between important districts and international borders.
