A devastating fire erupted at the Gamdevi market complex near Thane railway station in Maharashtra early Thursday, resulting in the deaths of a fireman and a security guard, with two other firefighters sustaining injuries, officials confirmed. The blaze, which began around 3:45 am, rapidly escalated, prompting a 'brigade call' as it engulfed numerous vegetable and clothing stalls in the bustling market area.
Casualties and Response
Additional Commissioner of Police Prashant Rode reported that a fireman and a security guard lost their lives in the incident. Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) chief Yasin Tadvi stated that two additional fire personnel were injured during firefighting operations. The fire was classified as a 'major fire' that destroyed the market complex, which housed clothing stalls, vegetable and fruit markets, and a local municipal ward office.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as massive flames and thick smoke billowed from the complex. Firefighting operations are actively underway, with all available fire engines from across the city and the RDMC team deployed to control the blaze. Firefighters faced significant challenges due to large quantities of highly combustible garments stored in the stalls. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials added.
