Two workers were killed in an explosion at a firecracker unit in Cumbum, Theni district, on Saturday morning when a room containing chemicals was opened. Police have arrested the unit's manager in connection with the incident.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred at Lakshmi Fireworks on Kattupallivasal Street in Cumbum. Around 9:30 AM, workers opened the unit's chemical mixing room after a week-long holiday, triggering a blast that resulted in the immediate death of two workers. The deceased were identified as Dinesh alias Deenadayalan, 23, and Surya Prabu, 21, both residents of Cumbum.
Police stated that the room was not opened with the required caution, as it should have been opened slowly to prevent any reaction. Fire and rescue personnel from Uthamapalayam and Cumbum, along with police, rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire within 30 minutes. The bodies were recovered and sent to Theni Government Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Unit Operations and Arrests
The unit was operating with only five workers. On the day of the incident, four workers reported for duty. Two of them, who were standing near the main entrance, escaped unhurt. A case has been registered by Cumbum North police, and further investigation is underway.
Police have arrested unit manager Thirupathi Raja, husband of the licensee Muthulakshmi. It may be recalled that a blast at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Kattanarpatti, Virudhunagar district, on April 19 claimed the lives of 25 people and left six injured.
