IRCTC Introduces Non-Vegetarian Meal Options on Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains

In a significant enhancement to passenger services, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has revised the food menu on the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains. Within just one month of its commercial launch, passengers traveling on the Howrah–Kamakhya–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper Express can now choose between vegetarian and non-vegetarian meal options during the ticket booking process itself.

Railway Minister Announces Culinary Expansion

On Sunday, February 1, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that non-vegetarian meal options would soon be introduced on the Vande Bharat Sleeper train. This announcement has now been implemented, marking a departure from the initial vegetarian-only menu that was offered when the train began operations.

The IRCTC stated in an official release: "Now relish Non-Veg. meal option on Train No: 27575/27576 Howrah-Kamakhya & Kamakhya–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper Express." This change comes as a response to passenger preferences and regional culinary traditions.

Regional Flavors Take Center Stage

The revised menu draws inspiration from the rich culinary heritage of Northeast India and Bengal. Passengers are being served authentic regional flavors, including traditional Assamese preparations alongside popular Bengali dishes. Building on these existing offerings, travelers can now enjoy chicken-based non-vegetarian meals as well.

The IRCTC emphasized: "This addition has been warmly received by passengers in the region, offering a true culinary delight to their journey. This enhanced meal experience elevates passenger satisfaction while promoting region-specific culinary heritage in an inclusive way."

By offering both vegetarian and non-vegetarian regional delicacies, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is setting a new benchmark in onboard hospitality according to railway officials.

Background: The Vegetarian-Only Menu Controversy

Last month, following the commencement of commercial operations of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) criticized the BJP-led central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the introduction of a vegetarian-only food menu on the newly launched train.

The ruling party in West Bengal had pointed out that the Vande Bharat Sleeper train connects Bengal and Assam regions where non-vegetarian food is widely consumed, yet initially offered only vegetarian options. This political controversy highlighted the gap between regional dietary preferences and the initial catering offerings.

Train Specifications and Popularity

The Howrah-Kamakhya-Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper Express was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 17. The semi-high-speed train has witnessed strong demand since its launch, with tickets frequently selling out within hours of booking opening.

The train comprises 16 coaches with three classes of travel:

  • Third AC
  • Second AC
  • First AC

This menu revision represents IRCTC's ongoing efforts to enhance passenger experience while catering to diverse dietary preferences across India's railway network.
