Women Agricultural Laborers Honored in Mysuru for Transformative Contributions

In a significant recognition of their vital role in farming, women agricultural laborers were felicitated by the Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers Association at the Jaladarshini Government Guest House in Mysuru on Monday. The ceremony celebrated the hard work and dedication of female farm workers who have been instrumental in revolutionizing India's agricultural system.

Honored Women from Various Villages

The association specifically recognized several women for their exceptional contributions to agriculture. Nagamma from Alaganchi village in Nanjangud taluk, Rupa from Shanthipura in HD Kote taluk, and Bhagyamma from Vajamangala in Mysuru taluk were among those felicitated during the event. Their stories represent the countless women who form the backbone of rural agricultural economies across Karnataka.

Association President Highlights Women's Revolutionary Role

Kurubur Shanthakumar, president of the Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers Association, delivered a powerful address emphasizing how women have been driving forces in transforming Indian agriculture. He stated that women laborers have brought innovation, resilience, and sustainable practices to farming communities, fundamentally changing how agriculture operates in many regions.

Shanthakumar made a strong appeal to the government, urging officials to extend free insurance coverage and comprehensive healthcare facilities to all women agricultural laborers. He argued that these essential protections would recognize their critical contributions and provide much-needed security for those working in challenging farm environments.

Political Criticism and Broader Demands

In a surprising moment of political commentary, Shanthakumar condemned a local MLA for allegedly seeking IPL cricket tickets from the government instead of focusing on farmers' interests. This criticism highlighted what the association sees as misplaced priorities among some elected representatives when it comes to agricultural issues.

MB Chethan, treasurer of the State Sugarcane Growers Association, expanded on the demands by calling for both state and union governments to implement 50% reservation for women in all sectors. This bold proposal aims to address gender disparities beyond agriculture and create more equitable opportunities across India's economy.

Association Leadership in Attendance

The felicitation ceremony saw participation from key association leaders including Attahalli Devaraj, the state organizing secretary, and Baradanapura Nagaraj, the general secretary. Their presence underscored the organization's commitment to recognizing women's agricultural labor and advocating for their rights and welfare.

The event represents growing recognition of women's indispensable role in Indian agriculture and marks an important step toward addressing the systemic challenges faced by female farm workers across Karnataka and potentially nationwide.
