A four-year-old child, Gurkaran Singh, who fell into a borewell on Friday evening in Chak Samana village, Hoshiarpur district, was rescued safely after a nearly nine-hour joint operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Punjab Police, administrative officials, and local volunteers.
Rescue Operation Details
The child, son of Harinder and Asha, was brought out of the borewell around 12:40 am on Saturday and immediately rushed to a hospital in an ambulance with a medical team. Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain and Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Kumar Malik led the operation. The DC explained that rescuers dug a parallel pit up to 25-30 feet deep and accessed the borewell shaft through a narrow tunnel to safely evacuate the boy, who was stuck at a depth of nearly 30 feet. Necessary machinery was brought to the site to intensify operations, and the NDRF team, comprising over 40 officials, provided crucial expertise.
Officials Present and Medical Condition
Punjab Jails Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh and Hoshiarpur Member of Parliament Dr. Raj Kumar Chabbewal were present at the site throughout the operation. Dr. Ravjot Singh, accompanied by a team of doctors, reviewed the child's condition at the civil hospital on Saturday and interacted with the medical staff and the child's family.
The minister, who is also the local MLA, stated that the boy's condition is stable and he was given liquid intake in the morning. A team of senior doctors is continuously monitoring his health. "He is recovering well. Necessary investigations have been conducted. A mild infection has been detected, which is expected after prolonged exposure to soil and dust during the incident," the minister said.
Further Medical Care
The child has undergone an eye check-up due to irritation caused by dust particles and is likely to remain under observation for 48 hours. If recovery continues, he may be discharged by Monday. Hospital officials confirmed that the child has been treated for minor eye irritation and is otherwise stable. Senior medical officers Dr. Navjot Singh and Dr. Neha Pal said Gurkaran has been kept under observation as a precautionary measure and is responding well to treatment.
