Andaman Naval Airfield Extension Dropped Over Environmental Concerns
Andaman Naval Airfield Extension Dropped Over Green Concerns

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has decided to drop the proposed extension of the INS Baaz naval airfield in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, citing environmental concerns. Instead, the focus will shift to developing a greenfield airport on Great Nicobar Island, a strategic location near the Strait of Malacca.

Environmental Concerns Halt Extension Plans

According to sources, the extension of INS Baaz, located on the island of Car Nicobar, was scrapped after environmental impact assessments highlighted significant ecological risks. The original plan involved expanding the existing airstrip to accommodate larger aircraft, but this would have required extensive deforestation and disruption to local wildlife.

Shift to Greenfield Airport on Great Nicobar

The MoD will now prioritize the construction of a new greenfield airport at Galathea Bay on Great Nicobar Island. This project is part of a broader infrastructure development plan for the island, which also includes a transshipment port and a power plant. The airport is expected to enhance India's strategic presence in the region, providing better connectivity and support for naval operations.

Strategic Importance of Great Nicobar Island

Great Nicobar Island is located at the southern tip of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, close to the Strait of Malacca, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. The new airport will significantly improve India's ability to monitor and respond to activities in the Indian Ocean region. The project is also seen as a key element of India's geopolitical strategy to counter Chinese influence in the area.

Infrastructure Development Plans

The greenfield airport is part of a comprehensive development package for Great Nicobar Island. In addition to the airport, the government plans to build a major transshipment port at Galathea Bay, which will serve as a hub for international shipping. A power plant and other supporting infrastructure are also included in the plan, which aims to transform the island into a strategic and economic asset.

Previous Plans and Current Status

INS Baaz, a naval air station commissioned in 2012, currently operates as a forward operating base. The extension plan was initially conceived to enhance its capabilities, but environmental clearance proved to be a major hurdle. With the decision to drop the extension, the MoD is now fully committed to the Great Nicobar project, which is expected to receive faster approvals due to its greenfield status.

The shift in focus underscores the government's commitment to balancing strategic needs with environmental sustainability. The new airport on Great Nicobar Island is projected to be operational within the next five to seven years, subject to timely clearances and funding.
