India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday stated that the BRICS foreign ministers were able to find common ground on key issues during their recent meeting, despite the diverse perspectives held by member nations. The statement underscores the bloc's ability to navigate differences and focus on shared objectives.
Meeting Highlights
The meeting, held virtually, saw participation from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Discussions covered a wide range of topics including global governance reforms, counter-terrorism, and the COVID-19 pandemic response. The MEA spokesperson emphasized that while differences existed, the ministers engaged constructively to identify areas of convergence.
Common Ground on Reforms
One of the key areas where consensus was reached was the need for reform of multilateral institutions, particularly the United Nations Security Council. The ministers reiterated their commitment to a more inclusive and representative global governance structure. They also agreed on the importance of strengthening the World Trade Organization and ensuring equitable access to vaccines.
Counter-Terrorism Cooperation
The ministers condemned terrorism in all its forms and called for concerted action against terrorist networks. They stressed the need to address both the symptoms and root causes of terrorism, including through the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.
Economic Cooperation
On the economic front, the ministers discussed ways to enhance intra-BRICS trade and investment, which have been affected by the pandemic. They welcomed the progress made on the BRICS New Development Bank and its role in financing infrastructure and sustainable development projects. The ministers also explored possibilities for digital cooperation and innovation-driven growth.
Health and Vaccine Equity
Given the ongoing health crisis, the ministers underscored the importance of vaccine equity and the need to strengthen global health governance. They supported the proposal for a BRICS Vaccine Research and Development Centre and called for collaboration in the production and distribution of vaccines.
The MEA spokesperson concluded by noting that the meeting demonstrated the resilience of the BRICS forum, which continues to serve as a platform for dialogue and cooperation among major emerging economies. The next BRICS summit is scheduled to be hosted by India later this year.
