Defence Minister Visits Vietnam, South Korea for Indo-Pacific Ties

India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh embarked on a five-day official visit to Vietnam and South Korea on Monday, aimed at bolstering defence ties and strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. The visit underscores India's commitment to deepening engagement with key partners in Southeast Asia and East Asia.

Visit to Vietnam

During his stay in Vietnam from June 18-20, Singh will hold talks with his Vietnamese counterpart General Phan Van Giang and other senior leaders. The discussions are expected to focus on enhancing defence industry collaboration, maritime security, and capacity building. India and Vietnam share a comprehensive strategic partnership, with defence being a key pillar. The two countries have been conducting joint military exercises and have signed several agreements on defence cooperation.

Singh will also visit the Vietnam People's Navy and the Vietnam Defence Ministry's military museum. He is scheduled to call on Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue. The visit aims to further strengthen the India-Vietnam strategic partnership, which has been elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2016.

Defence Industry Collaboration

India has been actively promoting defence exports and co-development with friendly countries. Vietnam is one of the key partners in India's 'Act East' policy. The two sides are likely to discuss joint production of defence equipment, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, which India has offered to Vietnam. India has already supplied Vietnam with a number of defence platforms, including patrol vessels and naval systems.

Visit to South Korea

From June 20-22, Singh will be in South Korea, where he will hold talks with his counterpart Lee Jong-sup and other senior officials. The agenda includes reviewing ongoing defence cooperation, exploring new avenues for collaboration in defence industry, technology, and research and development. India and South Korea have a Special Strategic Partnership, and defence cooperation is a key component.

The minister is also expected to visit the South Korean Defence Ministry's Agency for Defense Development and interact with Indian diaspora. The visit is expected to give a fresh impetus to the bilateral defence ties, including in areas like shipbuilding, aerospace, and cyber security.

Strategic Significance

The visit comes at a time when the Indo-Pacific region is witnessing increased geopolitical dynamics. India has been actively engaging with countries in the region to ensure peace, stability, and freedom of navigation. Vietnam and South Korea are important partners in India's Indo-Pacific vision, which is based on inclusivity, openness, and rules-based order.

India has been strengthening its defence cooperation with Vietnam and South Korea through regular high-level exchanges, joint exercises, and defence industry partnerships. The visit is expected to further consolidate these ties and contribute to regional security and stability.
