Dehradun Zoo Opens Enclosure for Rescued Himalayan Black Bear

Dehradun: Forest minister Subodh Uniyal on Wednesday inaugurated a new enclosure for a two-year-old Himalayan black bear at Dehradun zoo. The bear, which was rescued from the Kanasar forests in Chakrata in April last year, is now open for public viewing in an enclosure located within the zoo's nearly 20-hectare safari area.

Rescue and Approval Process

Officials stated that the bear was brought to the zoo after receiving approval from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA). The CZA cleared the bear for public display on March 9. Another Himalayan black bear, rescued from Gopeshwar in the Chamoli district, is currently awaiting CZA approval before it can be put on display as well.

Impact on Zoo Footfall and Revenue

During the inauguration, Uniyal noted that the tiger enclosure opened last year had significantly increased footfall and revenue at the zoo. “The zoo received nearly 1.5 lakh visitors and earned around Rs 1.5 crore,” he said. He added, “The black bear would further enhance the zoo’s role as a centre for wildlife awareness and tourism.”

Health Monitoring and Quarantine

Ranjan Mishra, principal chief conservator of forests and head of forest force, explained that the bear was kept under quarantine before being shifted to the public enclosure. “Zoo veterinarians and keepers monitored its health, feeding habits and behaviour during this period,” he said.

The addition of the Himalayan black bear is expected to attract more visitors and raise awareness about wildlife conservation. The zoo continues to play a vital role in rescuing and rehabilitating wild animals while providing educational opportunities for the public.
