IMD Forecasts Rains, Thunderstorms, Heat Waves Across India

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin, indicating that travelers planning to visit various parts of India in the coming week will encounter a mix of weather challenges, including rains, thunderstorms, strong winds, and warm conditions. The bulletin covers weather activity up to May 13.

Hill States and Northern Regions

Tourists heading to hill resorts in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are advised to exercise caution. The IMD has warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. A new western disturbance is expected to affect the Western Himalayas from May 10. Thundersqualls are predicted in Uttarakhand on May 8, with wind speeds potentially reaching 70 kmph. Travelers may face challenges due to unfavorable weather, particularly in landslide-prone areas.

Northeastern India

The northeastern states will continue to experience rainy weather over the next few days. Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to witness continuous rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Heavy rainfall is expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya on May 12 and 13. Tourists planning visits to destinations like Shillong, Cherrapunji, Tawang, or Kaziranga may encounter reduced visibility, muddy roads, and travel disruptions.

Eastern India

Eastern India is also expected to face active weather phenomena. Thundersqualls with strong winds up to 70 kmph are forecasted for Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand between May 9 and 10. Rainfall and thunderstorms are likely in Odisha, Bihar, Sikkim, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Kolkata and its adjoining districts have already experienced rainfall, as reported by the IMD. Travelers heading to hill stations like Darjeeling or coastal regions of Bengal should prepare for heavy rains and stormy weather.

Southern India

Southern India continues to feel the impacts of pre-monsoon weather. Thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh over the coming days. Kerala and Tamil Nadu can expect heavy rains throughout the week, while South Interior Karnataka may see heavy rainfall on May 8. Popular tourist spots such as Munnar, Wayanad, Ooty, Coorg, and Kodaikanal might experience wet conditions during this period.

Western India Heat Wave

Meanwhile, parts of western India are expected to see rising temperatures. The IMD forecasts isolated heat waves in Gujarat and West Rajasthan from May 9 to 13. Jaisalmer recorded the highest maximum temperature in the country at 45.1 degrees Celsius on May 7. Tourists planning to visit desert areas in Rajasthan or travel through Gujarat should avoid outdoor activities during afternoon hours.

General Advisories

Heavy rainfall may lead to localized floods, waterlogging, traffic jams, and occasional landslides in some parts of the country. Thunderstorms could damage temporary structures due to strong winds uprooting trees. Travelers are advised to keep track of weather updates and avoid traveling through waterlogged areas whenever necessary.
