India and Italy have decided to elevate their bilateral ties to a Special Strategic Partnership, with a shared goal of increasing bilateral trade to €20 billion in the coming years. The announcement was made following a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in New Delhi.

Both sides agreed to deepen defence ties through joint exercises, training, and co-development of defence equipment. Italy expressed interest in India's defence manufacturing ecosystem, while India welcomed Italian investments in the sector.
Economic Partnership
The target of €20 billion in bilateral trade by 2030 was set, with emphasis on diversifying trade and removing barriers. Italy is one of India's key trading partners in the European Union, and both sides aim to leverage each other's strengths in sectors like automotive, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy.
