Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi concluded her three-day official visit to India on July 3, 2026, and outlined five priority areas to fast-track bilateral cooperation: semiconductors, critical minerals, information and communications technology (ICT), clean energy, and pharmaceuticals.
Joint Declaration on Economic Security
In a post on X after the visit, Takaichi stated that India and Japan, as "trusted partners sharing strategic direction," have charted a medium- to long-term cooperation roadmap. She highlighted the issuance of a joint declaration incorporating specific collaboration in the five key areas, calling it a significant achievement for Japan's energy security, particularly regarding energy diversification and stable supply.
Takaichi also noted progress in security cooperation, including an agreement to promote the transfer of defense equipment and to hold a 2+2 ministerial meeting later this year.
Economic Events and Investment
During the visit, Takaichi attended economic events alongside Japanese companies eager to expand investment in India and pursue innovation partnerships. Discussions focused on linking India's growth potential with Japan's economic growth. She emphasized that both countries look forward to creating joint economic growth as they approach the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year.
"We will continue to take the lead in realizing a 'Free and Open Indo-Pacific' (FOIP) and work energetically to contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and the broader international community," Takaichi said.
16th India-Japan Annual Summit
Takaichi visited India from July 1 to July 3 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She participated in the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, where both leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation and discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest.
The visit underscores the deepening strategic partnership between India and Japan, with concrete steps in economic security, defense, and energy cooperation.
