Japan Introduces 'POWERR Asia' at G7 Summit
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi unveiled the 'POWERR Asia' initiative during the G7 Summit in Evian, France, on June 17, 2026. The framework aims to enhance energy security across Asia by strengthening global oil stockpiles in collaboration with the International Energy Agency (IEA). The proposal received support from fellow G7 leaders.
Key Discussions on West Asia and Energy Security
During a session on West Asia, joined by leaders from Egypt, Qatar, and the UAE, Takaichi emphasized the importance of free and safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. She introduced 'POWERR Asia' as Japan's flagship initiative for regional energy resilience. In a post on X, she stated, 'I also introduced Power Asia, which Japan has launched, and proposed supporting the strengthening of oil stockpiles in various countries in collaboration with the IEA, which received support.'
'POWERR Asia,' which stands for Partnership On Wide Energy and Resources Resilience, was first announced by Takaichi in April 2026. It focuses on emergency responses, financing procurement of crude oil and petroleum products, maintaining supply chains in Asia, securing critical minerals, and diversifying energy resources.
Bilateral Talks with US and India
In her meeting with US President Donald Trump, Takaichi welcomed the peace agreement between the United States and Iran. The two leaders discussed implementing the Japan-US tariff agreement and agreed to maintain close communication on key areas, including China. Takaichi noted, 'We also confirmed that we will continue close communication on responses to international situations surrounding the Indo-Pacific region, including China, and the Middle East.'
On the sidelines of the summit, Takaichi met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They discussed enhancing economic cooperation, prioritizing trade and investment. Modi tweeted, 'Had a great interaction with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan. India and Japan will continue to deepen ties in diverse sectors, with a priority on trade and investment.'
Stance on Ukraine and Geopolitical Challenges
Takaichi also addressed the Ukraine crisis, emphasizing opposition to unilateral changes to the status quo by force. She expressed concerns about military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, as well as strengthening ties between Russia and China. Earlier, during a working dinner, G7 leaders discussed geopolitical developments including the Russia-Ukraine war, West Asia security, and challenges posed by China.
