Karnataka: Eight Labourers Injured as Tree Branch Hits Lorry in Heavy Rain
Karnataka: Eight Labourers Injured in Tree Branch Accident

In a tragic incident in Karnataka's Kodagu district, eight labourers were injured after a large tree branch fell on a moving lorry during heavy rain. The accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon as the vehicle was transporting workers to a plantation site.

Details of the Incident

The lorry was navigating a winding road near the village of Suntikoppa when the branch, weakened by relentless downpours, snapped and crashed onto the cabin and cargo area. Raghavendra, a 32-year-old worker seated inside the cabin, sustained the most severe injuries. Glass shards from the shattered windshield pierced his head, while the branch struck his thigh, causing deep lacerations. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Injuries and Rescue Operation

The other seven labourers, who were in the open cargo area, suffered minor to moderate injuries, including bruises and fractures. Local villagers and passersby helped extricate them from the debris before emergency services arrived. All injured were taken to a primary health centre in Madikeri for initial treatment, with two referred to a larger hospital for further care.

Weather Conditions and Warnings

The region has been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall over the past week, leading to waterlogged roads and weakened trees. The Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority has issued advisories for residents to avoid travel during peak rain hours and to stay clear of large trees. Authorities are investigating whether negligence contributed to the accident, as the lorry driver reportedly ignored warnings about the unstable tree.

Community Response

Local officials have assured compensation for the injured labourers under the state's accident relief fund. The incident highlights the dangers faced by daily wage workers during the monsoon season, with many demanding better safety measures for transportation.
