Karnataka Steps Up to Quench Thirst of Wildlife Amid Drought
In response to the acute water scarcity gripping the state, Karnataka has launched a concerted effort to provide water for birds and wild animals. The Forest Department, in collaboration with local communities and NGOs, has set up hundreds of water troughs and tanks in critical habitats across forests and wildlife sanctuaries. This initiative aims to mitigate the impact of the severe drought on the region's biodiversity.
Strategic Placement of Water Sources
The water sources have been strategically placed in areas known to be frequented by wildlife, including dry riverbeds and near natural water holes that have dried up. Forest officials are ensuring regular replenishment of these water points using tankers. In some regions, solar-powered pumps have been installed to draw water from borewells, providing a sustainable solution.
Focus on Avian Species
Special attention is being given to avian species, with shallow water dishes and bird baths installed in and around forest fringes. Migratory birds, which arrive in Karnataka during the dry season, are particularly vulnerable. The department is also monitoring bird populations to assess the effectiveness of the measures.
Community and NGO Involvement
Local communities have been actively participating in the effort, with many villagers voluntarily filling water troughs. NGOs are conducting awareness campaigns about the importance of water conservation for wildlife. The initiative has also seen contributions from corporate social responsibility funds, which have financed the installation of larger water storage tanks.
Impact and Challenges
While the measures have provided immediate relief, officials acknowledge the challenges posed by the prolonged drought. Groundwater levels are depleting rapidly, and some water sources have had to be relocated as animals stray into human settlements in search of water. The Forest Department is also working on long-term solutions, such as rainwater harvesting and desilting of existing water bodies.
The Karnataka government has allocated additional funds for wildlife water supply, emphasizing the state's commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity. As the summer intensifies, the focus remains on ensuring that no wildlife perishes due to thirst. The collaborative effort serves as a model for other states facing similar challenges.
