Mumbai: An eight-year-old male leopard named Surya, housed at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), passed away on May 17, 2026, while undergoing treatment for severe renal and hepatic compromise.
Background of Surya
According to a press release issued by SGNP authorities, Surya arrived at the park in 2018 from the Ahilyanagar Forest Division as a two-month-old cub. He was hand-reared at the facility and had been under the care of the park's veterinary team ever since.
Health Deterioration
On May 14, 2026, subtle behavioral alterations were observed in Surya, despite the absence of any obvious clinical signs. Concerned by these changes, the veterinary team conducted immediate blood investigations and diagnostic evaluations. The results revealed severe chronic kidney compromise along with elevated liver parameters.
Despite intensive medical intervention, Surya's condition deteriorated rapidly, and he succumbed to the illnesses on May 17. The park authorities expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that Surya was a beloved resident and a symbol of the park's conservation efforts.
The incident highlights the challenges of managing wildlife in captivity, particularly with hand-reared animals that may develop health issues over time. The SGNP team continues to monitor other animals closely to ensure their well-being.
