The southwest monsoon continues to be active over Kerala, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for three districts on Monday. Two fatalities were reported in separate incidents in Malappuram and Palakkad districts, as heavy rainfall and strong winds lashed various parts of the state.
Details of the Incidents
In Malappuram, a person died after a wall collapsed due to the incessant rain. In Palakkad, another fatality occurred when a tree fell on a house. Several other incidents of damage to buildings and property were reported from across the state, with uprooted trees and waterlogging disrupting normal life.
Red Alert and Precautions
The IMD has sounded a red alert for the districts of Idukki, Malappuram, and Kozhikode, predicting extremely heavy rainfall. An orange alert has been issued for several other districts, including Palakkad, Thrissur, and Wayanad. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea as conditions remain rough.
Authorities are on high alert, with rescue teams and relief materials kept ready. The public has been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors during the heavy downpour. The monsoon season, which began early this year, has already caused significant damage in the state, and the latest spell is expected to continue for the next few days.
